— And Why Southeast Asia is at the Centre of It

Business travel in Southeast Asia is booming. Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Malaysia together generated close to $50 billion in corporate travel spend in 2025 — and that figure is climbing. Across the region, companies are sending their people further, more frequently, and into markets that move fast.

But the way those trips are managed? That's changing just as dramatically.

Conversational AI — the technology behind smart chatbots, voice assistants, and intelligent booking tools — is quietly reshaping how corporate travel gets planned, approved, booked, and tracked. And for travel managers across Southeast Asia, the shift is no longer on the horizon. It's already here.

What Is Conversational AI, and Why Does It Matter for Corporate Travel?

Conversational AI refers to software that can understand and respond to human language in real time — whether through text, voice, or chat interfaces. In corporate travel, that translates into tools that can book a flight, flag a policy breach, answer a duty-of-care query, or process an expense claim — all through a natural conversation, with no forms to fill in and no hold music.

Globally, around 80% of travellers are now open to using AI for trip planning and booking. And on the corporate side, 75% of travel buyers say they're interested in adopting AI-powered tools to handle programme-specific queries automatically. The appetite is there. The question is whether businesses are ready to act on it.

Southeast Asia: The Perfect Storm for AI Adoption

Southeast Asia's corporate travel landscape makes it an especially compelling environment for conversational AI to take hold — for three reasons.

Scale and complexity. The Asia-Pacific region is the world's largest corporate travel market, forecast to reach USD 679 billion in 2025. Managing travel across multiple countries, currencies, time zones, languages, and regulatory environments is inherently complex. AI thrives on complexity.

Mobile-first behaviour. Southeast Asian business travellers are among the most mobile-first in the world. Messaging apps — WhatsApp, LINE, WeChat, Telegram — are the default communication channel for millions of professionals across the region. Conversational AI slots naturally into this behaviour: query your travel tool the same way you'd message a colleague.

Rapidly maturing AI infrastructure. The AI sector in Southeast Asia was valued at over USD 4 billion in 2024 and is expected to grow fourfold by 2033. The APAC chatbot market alone is projected to grow at a 25.4% compound annual rate, reaching USD 7.34 billion by 2030. The foundation is being built at speed.

How It's Changing the Day-to-Day of Corporate Travel

1. Booking That Actually Works Around the Traveller

Traditional booking tools are clunky. They require the traveller to navigate portals, remember policy rules, and manually check options. Conversational AI flips that. A traveller in Jakarta can type: "I need to get to Singapore next Tuesday for two nights, budget under SGD 900" — and receive compliant options within seconds, already filtered against company policy.

AI travel platforms that personalise recommendations have seen conversion rates climb by 18 to 25%. That's not a marginal gain — it's a fundamental shift in how booking experiences are built.

2. Policy Compliance Without the Friction

Out-of-policy bookings are one of the biggest pain points in corporate travel management. They cost money and create audit nightmares. Conversational AI embeds policy at the point of search — so rather than flagging a breach after the booking is made, the tool simply doesn't surface non-compliant options in the first place.

In markets like Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines — where cost control has become a strategic priority for finance teams — this kind of automated guardrail matters enormously.

3. 24/7 Support Across Time Zones

One of the structural challenges of managing travel across Southeast Asia is time zones. A traveller stranded in Bangkok at 11pm needs help now — not when the office opens in the morning. AI-powered chat tools can handle the majority of support queries around the clock.

Navan's conversational AI, for example, processes over 150,000 chats every month, resolving more than half of all enquiries without any human involvement — while maintaining customer satisfaction scores on par with human agents.

4. Expense Management That Closes Itself

Post-trip expense reporting is universally disliked. It's slow, error-prone, and takes time that travellers would rather spend on actual work. Conversational AI can automate receipt capture, categorisation, and approval routing — all through a chat interface. The traveller takes a photo of a receipt; the AI does the rest.

5. Duty of Care in Real Time

When something goes wrong — a flight cancelled, a city under an alert, a natural disaster — travel managers need to know immediately where their people are and what options exist. Conversational AI can proactively notify travellers, suggest alternatives, and escalate to a human agent when the situation requires it.

In a region as geographically diverse as Southeast Asia, where weather events, political developments, and infrastructure disruptions can affect travel at short notice, this capability isn't a nice-to-have. It's essential.

What This Means for Travel Managers

The role of the travel manager is not being replaced by AI. It's being elevated. When the routine and repetitive is handled by intelligent tools, travel managers can focus on what actually requires human judgement: supplier relationships, programme strategy, traveller wellbeing, and cost optimisation.

The companies already piloting conversational AI in their travel programmes report sharper policy compliance, faster booking cycles, and reduced administrative burden across their teams. The evidence is building.

The Bliink Perspective

At Bliink, we work with businesses across Southeast Asia to make corporate travel simpler, smarter, and more cost-effective. Conversational AI is a central part of how we're thinking about the future of travel management in this region — not as a gimmick, but as a genuine operational shift.

If you're a travel manager, finance lead, or operations professional thinking about how AI could improve your travel programme, we'd love to talk.
